What are spider monkeys?
Spider monkeys are large New World monkeys that live in tropical rainforests from central Mexico in the north to Bolivia in the south. There are seven species of these agile primates, which get their name from the way their long limbs and tails resemble spider legs as they dangle from branches and swing through the treetops. Four long fingers on each hand help them grasp branches, too. (They also have thumbs but those are extremely short.) Their tree-to-tree locomotion, called brachiation, is how these swingers get around.
Why do female spider monkeys take the lead?
The Females Take the Lead. Spider monkey troops are matriarchal, meaning the females play a leadership role. Females actively choose their mates when breeding, which, in the case of white-bellied spider monkeys, leads to less aggressive behavior among males.

While baby monkeys can be handled by children, adult monkeys are very bad pets for kids since they can be unpredictable at times. Primate Diets
To prevent boredom and loss of appetite, it is important that a varied diet is given to primates. Commercial primate diets, very often referred to as monkey biscuits, monkey chow, or primate biscuits, should be served daily. Commercial primate diets should be the most important item to be fed to captive primates (about 75% of their meal) since they’ve been designed to provide a complete meal while also cleaning their teeth and stimulate their gums. Primates shouldn’t just be served monkey biscuits because a menu like that would simply become too boring. We recommend that their diet should be supplemented with fruit, vegetables, nuts, seeds, lean meat, and eggs. Fresh water should of course be available to them at all times.
